I haven’t been too much in touch with what’s happening with the blogosphere lately, as I’ve been busy with a ton of stuff - anyways, a comment left here yesterday by Simon of Otooo notified me that Entrecard was for sale, something I didn’t know.

Entrecard is something that has split people’s opinions quite a bit… on one side, you have people that cream over the system, and will not allow others to speak a single bad word about it… on the other hand, you have those that actively bash the system and hate everything about it. I tend to be somewhere in the middle - I think it is an alright network, with a killer idea behind it… I use it on newer blogs to get them a little traffic, however I have always advised people against getting too involved with the system as if you do so, you will find it a waste of time.

Discussing sales of bigger sites like this one is always an interesting thing though, so I’d like to see your opinions on this.

At the moment, opening bid is around $100,000 … to be honest, if I had that kind of money (sadly, I don’t… ) I’d probably have bid. The network houses upwards of 20,000 blogs right now, and even if you count off a few for being spam / auto generated, that’s still quite a lot. However, at the moment it is only making $2,000 per month - which is pathetic, to be honest (although granted, they state that they have not tried to monetize it).

I think that with a little bit of tweaking, Entrecard could easily make ten times that monthly revenue, or more.. with 80,000,000 impressions monthly and 3,000,000 clicks, it certainly has the ability.

The best way to monetize it would be to take a certain amount of the impressions, and run it as a CPM network I think… with a requirement that the Entrecard widget be near / above the fold. Even if they took just 30% of the impressions, and sold ad spots for $0.001 each, that’s $24,000 monthly - and these would be banners displayed on targeted (relative to niche, as Entrecard currently sorts it) websites. Of course, the $0.001 is just a bare minimum - websites could charge more based on the traffic they got monthly, and they could even offer some sort of revenue sharing program… with that amount of users, it would be harder NOT to make money. They could release a product, or promote someone else’s (at a conversion rate of 1% and a sale price of $50, that’s $10,000 per month)… I was astounded to hear that it was only making $2,000 per month with such huge amounts of traffic, and I’m sure the new owners will feel that it has plenty of potential for further development.

It’s been almost a year since it started, and growth has been phenomenal. This post won’t be of any real use to you, but I hope we can get some sort of debate flowing - what do you think of Entrecard as a service after 11 months, and if you had the capital… would you purchase it? Lastly, what do you think it will sell for (or if it will sell?) Closest guess to end sale price gets an ad slot in the sidebar for three months :)
