Generating Buzz is the Way Forward
Posted on December 28th, 2007 by Jason under Daily RamblingA few of you might have heard of the term ‘linkbait’ - what is it? Basically, it is something that is controversial, well argued or interesting - something that will make others want to link to you / visit your website. A contest is an excellent form of linkbait, although some may not see it as such - the contest that I held a while back generated around 1,000 links to this blog - something that will definitely help in the next PR update.
You do not need to have a blog and just use linkbait to generate interest and excitement in something you want promoted - I’ll give you an example. For my sales thread, repeated reminders that I would raise the price was something that definitely boosted sales - for the first couple of times, I did raise the price, but after that - the threat that I might (and I did occasionally, just to see how many would buy) was enough to create a frenzy. As of this moment, the thread that I sold off has 559 replies and 12,368 views - easily my most successful ever thread on Digital Point, and I’d reckon one of the most successful eBook selling threads within the past year or so. I’m sad to say that I sold it for cheap - with the funds on the way, there is nothing I can do (expect back out, which would just be greedy) but heh, you live and learn I guess.
Controversy is one of the things that does best - my post about the John Cow Theme Ripper was easily one of the most popular ones on this blog, with it nearing 40~ comments - if I had replaced that with a post about how to blog successfully, I doubt it would get as many - even though it would probably be more useful. Everyone loves controversy and even better getting to talk about it - that’s why the post was quite a popular one.
Studying is doing horrible - I’ve done maybe 2 hours total so far, and with exams coming up on the 2nd… it does not bode too well. I know a bit about most things, but am lacking on the specific questions they ask you - i also have a chunk of math to cover (a subject I absolutely suck at) so it’s time to stick the finger in and get going. With New Years coming up, I don’t know how successful that will be - I will try though. I actually cannot wait for them to get over - I will have a full month to start dominating the blogosphere (hehe) after that (as I’ll get a break) and I will hopefully increase in earnings. I signed up to Commission Junction today, and am pretty impressed with the ease of use - you might see a couple more banners pop up here and there.
I’m going to start building an email list; Aweber seems to be the best option and I’ll hopefully do well with it; having a list of 1,000+ (and that’s the number I’ll be aiming for, at the beginning at least) is a great step to earnings thousands for any product you come out with in the future - I’ve been reading case studies from some of the gurus and some of them have earned up to $75,000 in 24 hours after sending out a short email. Whilst that is far away, for me at least - a tenth of that seems an attainable figure, with 1000 people purchasing a product at $7.5 each.
Not much more to add - I’m going to play around with my Commission Junction account, so I will update you on its (and the exam study) progress - talk tomorrow.
Something I forgot to add - I was awarded the extremely prestigious blog of the week award from GoldPoster.net - I’d like to that all my readers for making this possible, as well as my mother, my father, my teachers at kindergarten and of course the little dog I met in the fourth grade. I think I’m going to cry at the awards ceremony, but anyways, if you’d like to take a look at my award, go to this link.
Last but not least, Sawan won the John Cow advertising spot (will contact him through MSN/Yahoo) for being the 1000th commentator (not bad in the amount of time!); I’ve also emailed EQOZ hosting and they will be contacting the winners with their prize details. Thanks! ![]()

Cool post there Jason.
Nice ideas..
and yeah..
Congrats Sawan
Thanks a lot
I will need to get a professional 125 by 125 banner done sharpish, in order to get some clicks from John Cow, all the other banners look cool.
controversy is awesome at gaining not only readers but comments, and you seem to do it great!
Good idea
I love generating a good buzz…haha
Great idea.
Like everyone else said, good idea. Congrats SawanM for winning the ad.
black power!
oops wrong blog… o_o
I’m going to be generating buzz on my blog in about 6 months.
I’d rather see useful posts than controversial ones.
@Sammy..
don’t tell it’ll take you 6 months to prepare a controversial post..??
LOL I can start one right now, but I’d rather not :). All in due time.
