Maximise Your Marketing Efforts With Forums

Forums are the easiest way to promote a new site.
Especially large ones.
Every day, you get people asking on the very forums they should be “stealing” traffic from… “how do I promote my site”?
The problem is, a lot of people, including those that read this blog think that IM / MMO is the only way forward. IM / MMO is a very, very, very easy niche to do well in, if you work it right… however, when starting out a different niche is better to go for. Which niche? That’s entirely up to you.
Why other niches? The thing is, people in the IM niche are constantly being sold to… they’re preconditioned to avoiding ads, preconditioned to be wary of affiliate links and more knowledgeable than your average web user. If you recommend a product to an IM-wary user, they’ll usually wonder whether you’re doing so solely because it’s a good product, or only because it pays a better commission than product B (and so they should wonder).
Whereas you recommend a product to a non IM-wary user and they’ll check it out, buy it if they have a need… as long as you cloak your affiliate link, they’ll probably use it simply because they don’t know how not to.
Anyways, on to forums.
You can grow your blog(s) entirely using forums. I did this for this very blog, simply because when I started out I had no idea what social networking / bookmarking, comments, contests and various other things were. I didn’t even know what RSS stood for and still don’t.
At its peak, this blog was getting around 4,000 - 5,000 uniques per month JUST from forums.
Of course, you need to do this carefully. Forums can be a huge time waster if you’re not careful - you can easily promise to spend just ten minutes on one and find yourself a couple hours later having nothing done.
How should you get the most out of forums? For me, it’s pretty simple really.
Out of every five minutes you are on a forum, you should be doing at least one thing that benefits you.
Some may think that this is selfish, but let me explain.
Putting out a high quality forum post does benefit you, as people will grow used to them and trust you to be a knowledgeable and high quality source of information.
Changing your avatar to something catchy benefits you.
Having an interesting signature benefits you.
As long as you can see that there is enough interest in the niche, start a blog on that topic. Promote the blog on the forum for a month, producing 1-3 quality articles on that blog per week (these can/should be outsourced, of course) and at the end of that month promote a high quality information product. If your reputation is reasonably good on the forum, and the posts you’ve done on the blog are good too, your conversions will be awesome.
Next step? Flip the blog.
Rinse, repeat, over and over and over and over and over again.
Of course, if you’re lazy… *cough* you can outsource the posting on the forums. You should aim to pay around $0.10 per post, each around 10 - 20 words long and all on the topic of the forum (none in general chat etc). You want around 500 - 1,000 posts on the forum (more or less depending on the size). Make sure you make use as much as possible of whatever’s allowed to help you stand out - avatar, signature, blog feed, different colour text in posts and so on.
The great thing is, that once you build up this reputation on forums, it remains… unless you do anything stupid of course. You can market new sites, promote other products, link to your other sites to get them indexed fast and so on.
Building backlinks. If the forum is dofollow, each post with your signature link enabled counts as ONE backlink to your site. So 1,000 posts = 1,000 backlinks. Of course, most forums allow you to have 4-5 signature links, meaning that you can help along multiple sites at the same time. You can even sell your signature links - again, signature links on ‘niche’ forums tend to sell for more than they would on IM-knowledgeable forums, since users tend to be less unaware and signature links will get clicked more.
Having backlinks also adds value to a site, and you can easily agree with a buyer to keep the link there for X months even after the site is sold. Remember, everything that adds value is good.
You can even create and promote your own product, as if you’re reputed enough and market yourself as an ‘expert’ in the niche (outsourcing IS king) people will buy from you. Of course, make sure the product itself is of high quality and if you don’t know what you’re talking about, make sure the person that you outsource to DOES know what they’re talking about. You could even build a list through a catchy signature link on forums alone.
Forums should provide you with multiple ideas… if you’re not milking them already, you’re missing out. Get to it! ![]()

Great points about the forum signatures. The linkbacks alone can make it very worthwhile. Glad to see you finding time to post!

I agree, its amazing how many links you can get for a blog just by putting a link in your signature. Another good way to make a ton of backlinks is by commenting on blogs in a similar niche to yours.

Yes, I agree that forums are a good way to promote a blog. I prefer it to blog commenting
.
It would be interesting to compare forum posting, social bookmarking, blog commenting and see which form of promotion gets you the most traffic. There’s an experiment for you.
Forums work great for promoting your site. Not only do you get backlinks and traffic to your site but you may learn something by reading others posts.

So true. The good forums like warrior are always filled with valuable information. Personally I’ve learned a lot just by reading some of the posts there. It helps me getting article ideas as well.
Another awesome post. Forum backlinks are highly underestimated.
Forums are a great marketing tool, for your service, product or blog, whatever it is that you need to market. It could be rated right up there with blog commenting.
decent tips here. The “dofollow” forums are few and far between though.
Also, at times I feel it is more profitable for me to sell my siggy than to have it point to one of my websites…
Yes, I agree forums are a good way to promote a blog. But, to build good reputation on forums is a hard things to do. After reading your post, I hope I can increase my forum reputation

Your posts always bring to light something that deep down I already knew, but had never really concentrated on. For example, this one…I post the forums…some days I post to the forum like mad. I think I had let myself sink into a spot thinking that I’m out of unique information to share, but really, what hasn’t been repeated at DP (and others) hundreds of times over.
Great post that brings to light a simple, but maybe not commonly thought of, way to bring traffic. Thanks!
This is awesome advice! I know a lot of bloggers have been wondering how to make the most of forums. It’s never a good idea to just start posting haphazardly. As you recommend, you have to ensure that you’re making good use of your time while on the forums. Thanks for sharing your wisdom!
I agree so much with it. When I started last April I did give some nice tips to the dp blogging section which I feel most people there at that certain section are noobs.. I also helped local bloggers here in my country to start off and then there comes the traffic..

I’ve not really used forums to do any marketiting for my blog - the most I’ve done is leave blog comments and my visitors have all stemmed from that. I have added my blog to my sigature now though in a couple of forums - but I rarely visit them, or have the time to!

Very nice post - I like the part about doing something for yourself for every 5 minutes you spend in a forum. It really is easy to get lost in the conversations and looking for new topics. So next thing - do you have a list of good forums, especially those do-follow ones for the internet marketing arena?
David’s last blog post..Anchor Text 101
The big webmaster related ones are Digital Point, SitePoint, Warrior Forum, V7N, Webmaster Talk and BlackhatWorld. A couple of those are not dofollow though.
There are various lists available - I’ll have a looksee, but just Google “Dofollow Niche Forums” and you’ll find plenty.
Occurred to me though that a lot of forums are do not follow, do they turn out to be as successful marketing tools?
If they have traffic, definitely. All you’ll miss out on is building links, which you can do in other ways.
I agree. I mostly look for getting traffic from forums. I depend upon blogs for backlinks.
I have also seen that if you’re active on a forum, then you’re sure to get a lot of traffic from it. But once you stop posting there, the traffic also falls.
Ganesh’s last blog post..Blogs that I Read and Enjoy - Part 2
I visit GameFAQs’ forums and they are very big, but they also have very, very strict guidelines on advertising. You can only advertise one website in your signature, and it cannot be about contests or things for sale. So when you look for the right forums, make sure that their Terms of Service do not undercut the marketing advantages of posting in one.
Quick question Jason. I am getting started on a blog idea that I have had for a long time, what is your advice about getting started? Should I focus on content for awhile before I start promoting the site and worrying about backlinks. I always feel like I should have a routine after every post, like make comments, social bookmarking, article submission etc… I get caught up with SEO too fast. Also, you say that I can outsource my posts, what can I expect to pay? and will it be a good job?
You should aim to have around 1-3 posts before you start promoting it… I like to start from the get go, no point in wasting content.
If you outsource posts, you should aim for $0.01 per word, or $3-$5 per post (look for bulk discounts and so on). As for quality, I’ve found a few pretty decent copywriters at that price, but of course you have to test each one, ask for samples, see reputation, use Copyscape etc.
As for a routine… that’s an interesting idea for a post, I’ll try and put one out in a few days discussing how new bloggers can promote their new blogs
I look forward to the post. Also, where is the best place to find copywriters? I currently use scriptlance and elance for other projects, do you think i’ll be able to get a $3-$5 post on those sites? That is not a bad price at all.
But Now a days many people are considering each post as one backlink and they are spamming the forums will it really helps to increase the back link and will google will consider it???

Forums are good for traffic, especially if your website is relevant to the needs of the people that frequent the forum at hand.
Good stuff in there, thanks.
So, what’s RSS stand for?
Forums are great for backlinks and traffic. I had no idea you could outsource your comments.
The problem with MMO also extends to the health/weight loss niche. The problem is more in finding a great product or service that you can vouch for. Most are garbage and I don’t recommend them.

I must agree, forums are a great way of getting backlinks. Make sure the signature is eye catching! You will be successful.
Yeah I agree! Forum marketing is one of the best ways at driving traffic to your blog or website. It also gains and help build your link popularity. The funny thing is many people don’t do this and they are missing out on a lot like you said. Another great way at building traffic is through article marketing and by also commenting on blogs as well. Using a combination of these methods will definitely help people get web traffic as well as increase their earnings and make even more money online.
What a great post on forum marketing you’ve done! People should definitely take your advice and join many different forum websites in your same niche to gain even more blog traffic.
Keep up the great work! Look forward to reading more.

It is very easy to get caught reading and wasting time in forums. I am guilty of doing that a lot. I try to get in a habit of posting x amount of posts per day in various forums that way I am more focused and can get more done.

Another advantage of forums is actually putting your name out there, so that people know who you are. It’s a good way of establishing some sort of expertise and credibility. A lot of internet marketing is branding your name. And forums makes it easy to do that.
I have two questions: who the heck do you outsource forum posting to and what large forums are dofollow?
