Take Advantage Of Free Bloggers And Make Money Flipping Websites
Posted on August 19th, 2008 by Jason under Make Money Online, Website TipsI could write about here on entrepreneurial topics and the like, but most people have told me that they don’t give two shits about the life of an entrepreneur and would like to know more about stuff that’s making me money.
Now, as I run this blog for you guys - thought I might as well follow their advice, and I’ll bring you stuff that has made me money - not rehashed crap that has been repeated on thousands of other blogs, but stuff I’ve used successfully (and maybe theories I’ve thought up - with a disclaimer, of course) and stuff that you guys can use too.
By no means is the content on here revolutionary - it’s usually just taking simple ideas and tweaking them or putting them together to make huge profits relative to time put in.
If you want to make money online, you have to learn not to complicate things. Now for me - if things are too complicated, I can’t even be bothered to try and understand them, and if things are too difficult or involve too much work, I can’t be bothered to do them. Which is why I keep things simple and for the moment, it’s working.
This idea could be packaged up and sold, and I don’t say this about many posts on this blog. A few, but not many.
Anyways… no more fluff, let’s get started. You can make a full time income with this idea alone.
A lot of the posts on here over the last month or so have been about website flipping… I started website flipping around 2-3 months into my IM ‘career’ and till date it’s been one of my biggest earners. In few other industries can you create something in the morning and sell it in the evening for hundreds (or thousands) of dollars, and with everything being capable of being outsourced, well… when it’s so easy, you just have to try it. I’m in the middle of flipping a medium - large blog live for you guys and will break down what exactly I did.
The problem with doing this is that if you want to make a lot of money, it is far easier to do things in bulk… it’s easier to make ten small websites as opposed to one dominator one. However, to make a decent amount of money (that is a few thousand monthly), I’d say a blog (in any niche) would have to be around the similar size of TUK (500-1000 RSS) or bigger.
Buying multiple - I currently own 11 blogs with more than 500 subscribers - blogs like this would set you back at least $20,000, probably treble or quadruple that (just for comparision, CashQuests sold for $15,000 with around 1,000 subscribers).
However, I paid less than $150 for each blog I run, didn’t set them up myself and get all content on them free. I don’t spend any time updating them, and less than an hour a week maintaining them. They all bring in money too, and have people approaching them to advertise on them and have contests sponsored. This is literally easy money - and today I’m going to talk about how I’ve done it.
This is similar to offline marketing, the concept at least.
A lot of you will have started out on free blogs - that is, blogs using Wordpress.com or Blogspot.com, blogs that didn’t cost a cent to run. Most will have moved on, however at the moment there are still a lot of people on them, most often because they don’t know about doing any more than what they currently are.
First off - a warning - most blogs that you can work this deal with will not be in the internet marketing niche (which includes blogging tips, making money online etc) as they tend to be more web-aware. In other niches though, you can profit.
You’ll have to find the blogs yourself - how you do this is up to you. You can Google them, use search tools like Technorati… entirely up to you. You’re looking for blogs with upwards of 200 subscribers, with a decent amount of traffic and interaction (comments on posts and the like). The best blogs you will find will be on Wordpress.com.
The two disadvantages of Wordpress.com are:
- Looks unprofessional (XYZ.Wordpress.com instead of XYZ.com)
- Can’t be monetized
This is where you come in.
What you’ll be doing is approaching bloggers you find on free hosting - bloggers that currently run a growing blog and with an active following, and push to them the benefits of moving to a ‘regular’ website - that is, their own domain, on your hosting and the ability to make money.
Remember, these are bloggers that have been blogging because they like to. Not for any other reason than that.
You’ll finance the move, of course. Depending on you, this will involve various things - a domain, hosting (you can host all your sites on a Hostgator server pretty easily). I like to throw in a custom Wordpress design as well, based on their specifications. If you want to, you can buy a developer license to something like the Revolution theme and use those for your blogs.
Each website costs me $10 (without the theme) up to $150 with the theme custom created for me. What the blogger then does is post on his current free blog that s/he is moving to a more professional platform, and their readership will follow.
You also offer them a 50% cut of all revenue the website makes. Considering (Wordpress.com bloggers) they were making $0 before, most will be ecstatic to hear about this. You take care of the monetization completely - I like to use Adsense because it works on niche blogs, but I also do banner sales, CPM etc. Most websites have paid for my initial investment by the end of the first month, even with me only taking 50% of the revenue. Everything after that is profit.
To the blogger him/herself, this is like a goldmine - getting paid to do something they were doing anyways, on a more professional look (a proper .COM domain - remember how thrilled you were when you got your first one?) with a design based on their specifications.
For you, you’re getting a blog worth a hell of a lot of money that comes with an active following and existing traffic at a fraction of the price. One where content is created at no charge whatsoever. One where you have to spend around an hour a week tweaking ads, organizing contests etc. When a blog is big enough, people will be climbing over themselves to sponsor contests.
Last week, I sold one of these blogs for $5,000. They go for more than a regular blog would because the blogger will stay on, as long as you continue the agreement. If you want to, you can give the blogger a cut of the sale - you don’t have to though.
Hope you guys use this idea, as it’s a great one and I haven’t seen it discussed anywhere else. Approach bloggers on free platforms and you can make a lot of money - just don’t be selfish, and try and let them benefit as much as you are - remember, its their content, their following. Good luck!
I love website flipping - this month is heading towards being my biggest ever income wise, and the best thing is that none of it had to do with things I don’t really like. Very little was from affiliate marketing, as I’ve cut down on that almost completely - why make others money when I can make myself money? I’m on course for over 20k, and there are still a few days left. Small money for some, but for others like me…
As always, if you have any questions let me know via the comments. Hope this post was worth waiting for, as I did take a break from here- I’m also going to talk about another variation of website flipping soon that I came across a few days ago and mentioned in an earlier post. How does 3k for an hour of work sound? ![]()

I’m calling bullshit on this, unless you can prove you made 5,000 in one sale by showing a receipt or the auction, then I just don’t believe you, sorry…
Way to go kid…..20 k is not a small amount to me and to most bloggers

I just got a perfect idea from this post.. Or actually thought of a new way of doing something I have already been doing with not so huge results.
I will try to do that and write a post about it if it’s succesfull.
Thanks for the idea! =P

@ Dave - is being an anonymous troll a fun task? I’m not going to reveal anything to you, simply because I don’t have to - and I couldn’t care less if you believed me or not.
If you’re the same Dave, you raised decent points in the FTA review comments section - but leave a URL or future comments of yours will be deleted. If you want to be a troll, have something to show for it.
@ BHW, good luck! If you think up anything that hasn’t been talked about here, feel free to add as that’s always helpful
Going to be trying this along with various other methods this week. Hopefully big money is follows me along.

Haven’t been here in a long while, but I have to say this is a great post mate. I really like this idea and I might try it myself.
I guess the hard part is finding someone who is completely oblivious to the potential of their blog, since many of the people using free platforms don’t want to have advertising for various reasons…
@ CRO, my email inbox is looks like a group of rampant three year olds ran though it… do you have MSN? Feel free to pitch any kind of partnership at me, although use the Gmail email. I’ll be busy for the rest of this month, but after that…
@ Monty, good to see you around mate. Forgot to add that yes, not every blog you approach will agree - some will ignore you completely, some will be skeptical at the out of the blue email offering them the chance to make money, but I generally find that out of every 10-15 blogs I email, 2-3 are interested.
Actualy a nice idea. I thought of it myself a year ago and contacted some blogger. Unfortunately none agreed. I will give it a new try. No competition, just looking for german blogs *g*

Bruno Auger’s last blog post..Five Essentials of Customer Support
Cool concept. Obviously the challenge is finding someone that you can “bankroll” for less than $150. But if you say that you get 2-3 out of 15 contacts, then WOW!
What kind of contract are you forming with these bloggers? How are you paying them their share? Are you opening up joint accounts for the monetization portion? This has been a challenge for me in the past, when purchasing someones “adult” videos from them. There really needs to be a pretty detailed contract about what is going to be done and what can’t be done.
There are alot of unanswered questions here… or maybe I am “overcomplicating” this. I would like to hear more about it though.
Thanks for sharing this!!

Also: when is your class coming out? The one where we all gave ideas? I am looking forward to dealing with the technical stuff using info from that.

At the moment I cant afford outsourcing. Are there ways to flip websites for around $500 a pop without subscribers? Ones I can create myself.

Ryan @ Smarter Wealth’s last blog post..Site Flipping Specifics
Great helpful post with a few areas I had not considered.
I have a problem though - I have set out to monetize websites and build them up to a standard fit for sale … only to find when it starts making money I cant let it go lol - so consequently I have until now stuck to selling domains rather than websites and have a little collection of sites that bring in monthly $
Im now bookmarking your site and reconsidering site flipping - I just need to be less attached to my babies
I just made my first contact with a wordpress.com blog that knew nothing about hosting, plugins or how to make money with a blog. He has a nice following of about 520 rss subscribers and about 30 comments on each post.
He was surprised that I wanted to pay for the domain name and hosting and help setup his site for making money. He told me i could keep 75% of the revenue even after telling him I would do it for 50%.
It is really easy to get non-techie niches to go for this pitch. This is totally great! Thanks Jason!

Thinking again.. The method I thought about isn’t as good as this.. But might still work. I will try and report back.
The selling of the blog sounds a bit hard.. You’d have to tell the writer that you are selling the blog. You’d have to explain this whole thing to the buyer. And what if the buyer doesn’t want to renew the domain again or.. or starts to write content himself?
Or then you could just be evil and tell nothing to the writer. Bahah. >.>

O. Messaoud’s last blog post..I want to buy ECs, sell me yours
I have the same question as blackhatway, how do you insure that you are not selling the site out from underneath the blogger? The new owner (buyer) will be free to do whatever they want with the site since they will have full control of it. How do you make sure that they don’t eliminate the 50/50 deal with the blogger and completely cut them out of the site? I could see this happening and I think it would be very unfair (and unethical) to do this to the site’s “content creator”, the blogger.
@egk and blackhatway - you can use feedcompare.com

Mattaw’s last blog post..Why Good Customer Support Is Essential
The element of trust is rather important here because the blogger will depend on you to report the amount of money made each month. If it is a sufficiently large amount, he may decide to do it on his own. Also, if there are illegal clicks, our adsense account may be in trouble.
Maintaining long term relationships with the bloggers may be difficult so a sale is inevitable at some point of time. Did you have a formal agreement with the buyer before closing the sale?

You guys are focusing on flipping these blogs and the bloggers. What if you just keep them and collect the 50% of the revenue from then on? Do that 10 times and you got yourself some real good renewing income and you don’t have to do any work at all.
Of course you could flip the ones that were not doing that well or that were problematic. The issue with the new owner stealing the blog or 100% of the revenue can be taken care of with a contract and passing it onto the blogger as well.
But I don’t see how a new owner would want to cheat the blogger out of his income because he would stop posting or post horrible things about the new owner. If you stole his blog completely then his followers would notice and you would have a decline in visitors. Believe me… I noticed the writing change over at JohnCow.com before they even announced that it was bought out by someone new.
You could even flip the blog to the blogger himself and help set him up with his own hosting and give him the domain name. 100% of the profit might get the blogger thinking and flipping it to him might be a way out for him too.
The appeal of this flip is that its renewing revenue (even if it is 50%) and that you don’t have to do any work to maintain it. I would buy one of these flips in a second!
CreatingRevenueOnline.com’s last blog post..My First MMO Failure
@Jeflin - You would own the domain name so he wouldn’t be taking that with him to the new blog location even if he did decide to do it on his own.
If he did… you would be able to just change the password on the blog, delete his last post about moving to another url or location and then flip the whole blog itself for an even bigger profit. The url will be getting most of the traffic and if you catch it in time, you won’t loose too many visitors.
I would prefer to try and flip the blog to the blogger anyway. Actually I am thinking about putting the option in the contract so there is always an option to buy out.

WOW, Im sold! I never made a penny off my old blog. I gotta start rethinking and relaunching!
Man I hardly slept last night after reading this. I found two GPR-5 & three GPR-3s that I just went ahead and bought the domain names for. Can’t believe the WP Bloggers hadn’t secured their own unique handle.
Seems like it would be an easy sale to draw them over to a money making venture. Hope so.
Jason, would you share some of your approach methods with them for us? I don’t want to piss them off when I make my pitch.
Holy crap, this is brilliant. I can’t wait to get them going.

@ All
There are an insane amount of questions that to be honest with you I don’t have the time or energy to answer one by one, however I’ll cover a few below…
Re Feed Count - some will have it displayed, some you can use a tool like Blog Perfume ones on. For others, you can contact them asking about traffic and the like.
Re updating… the blogger will stay on, that is the whole point of the pitch. He’s doing the same thing he was doing earlier, in exchange for 50% of the revenue (and you hooking him up). Win / Win.
As for selling, you have to look at your buyer, and see how much you trust them to keep the deal going. My sale was to someone I know and trust and have done business with before, and a few hundred income monthly for no work… few buyers are going to want to shake that up.
Of course, as CRO said - you don’t have to sell, you could keep the income yourself. The more blogs you get, the more income streams. Him getting a 520 RSS blog (worth a few thousand, minimum) shows this works. Are you guys going to do the same?
Re the approach, just be polite, not too sales-y and pitch the benefits to them.
As for the revenue, I pay them once monthly via Paypal and give them bi weekly updates on figures. Considering that most were being paid zilch before, they don’t tend to hassle too much.
These are some good answers, what about the technical stuff?
Also I found a nice tech blogspot blog which I might try it on, who knows? Does it sound like a good idea? If I find out how to transfer and also get in more programs and invest to get a theme for it and a logo? (I think it already has a nice logo).

This guy is one of the biggest liars I have ever met online, there are tons of reasons I am saying this, this blog doesn`t receive much traffic since it has been started nor has great revenues and I bet it`s the only one he has. People think that they will get away with the lies but think don`t work this way online. Lets have a look at people that really earn that kind of money, TUK only comes up with things like I own 11 blogs (WTF are they) ? , I sold one website for 5000 (WTF blog?) , show us the proof otherwise you will still be the same liar with no money what so ever :))
Yeeeeaaaa, another anonymous twit (or should I say sh*t head) that challenges Jason’s FREE INFORMATION (did I mention FREE!!)! I could understand the outcry if you paid for this information, but because it is free how can you even complain? Find another blog that shares as much as TUK, and ask them what sites they own! I am sure they are open to competition so they should let you know all the details of their sites (sarcasm, in case you are too dumb to understand)!
Please do share the “tons of reasons” that you have that makes TUK “one of the biggest liars [you] have met online”.
@ Alex, ask any marketer to show you their best sites, and they won’t. Only a moron would, and although I have engaged in moronic activities in the past, this will not be one of them.
Everyone wants proof - why? You show proof (and I have done this on sales pages I’ve run - legitimate proof) - you get accused of faking your stats; you don’t show proof, you get accused of being a liar.
I never claimed this blog had shitloads of traffic, or made millions of dollars monthly, because it doesn’t. It’s a place to chill out, share information and make friends. If you do not like it, do not read it - so be it.
Nice having you around though - if you want to email me a list of your most profitable sites, feel free to do so - details on the contact page
@Alex: What a moron you are. Instead of attacking his stats why don’t you try his methods and if then and only then, you want to bitch about his methods, go for it.
But until you try them… stfu!
Jason’s methods are piss easy to do but that might still be more than a moron like you can handle.
